A big thank you for two more cards!  Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] vecturist  and [livejournal.com profile] arlessiar  for their Christmas cards =)

Here's where I need your help.  I was thinking about doing a 365 project, but I know I won't finish it.  But I can do a 52 project. I have been thinking of what I can do once a week for a year.  Here is something that I can do that would be way different from what I normally do.

A movie a week.  Sounds easy, eh?  Well, I am known for only seeing 1-2 movies a year.  In fact, I didn't go to a single movie this year.  Not one.  I have this track record for all my life.  Which means, if there is a good movie in the past 20-30 years, chances are I haven't seen it.  Really.  No Country for Old Men?  Nope.  Apocalypse Now?  No way.  Pirates of the Caribbean?  Not a chance.  Why?  I think I was forced to see too many bad movies as a child and my brother always got to choose the movie which meant we saw Iron Eagle, The Last Starfighter and Fletch.  Oy

So- what movies would you suggest?  There are a few standards that I have seen, but most I have not.  And I can never be truely good at trivia until I do. =)  And I'm not talking about the past 5 years, but if it's a classic, there is a good chance that I didn't see it.  I have seen Arsenic and Old Lace and Harvey.  I love me some Cary Grant.   Some movies in the past 5 years that I have seen are: Wall-E, 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Sicko, Shawn of the Dead/Hot Fuzz, All Harry Potter Movies and of course A Dog's Breakfast.

Thanks

Up was good. The Maltese Falcon is a favorite if you haven't seen it yet.

I have not seen Up nor The Maltese Falcon. In fact, the MF was what started this in the first place. I was trolling through one of my fave websites http://www.lileks.com/bw/noir/falcon/index.html and I realized how many movies I didn't watch and how shut off I am from a lot of popular culture by not watching movies. I know I have a short attention span, but if I can watch an all day NCIS marathon, I can watch one movie a week.
I'll add that to my list

Yay, the card arrived! \o/
That makes me very happy as I don't trust the mail services anymore since that one birthday card for you never arrived.

Movies? Well, I almost never go and see movies in the cinema nowadays, when I'm interested in a movie then I usually wait until it comes out on DVD. I saw Star Trek in the cinema though, didn't want to miss that on the big screen. And Mamma Mia last year for the same reason.
Although I don't often sit down to watch a movie by myself, I have still seen quite a lot of movies over the years, I reckon. Probably because I like to watch movies with my parents or friends (one of them owns TONS of DVDs). So here's a short list of movies that come to my mind right now which I can recommend. Don't know if you'll like them as well, of course. :)

Historic:
Gladiator

Music:
Moulin Rouge
Mamma Mia

Action mixed with humour:
Hot Fuzz

Action mixed with fantasy:
The Dark Knight
Men in Black

Deep/serious:
The Indian Runner
Thelma&Louise
Brokeback Mountain
Dead Poets Society
The lives of others
Lost in translation

Cute and romantic:
Notting Hill
Love Actually

Clever:
The Truman Show
The name of the rose

Thriller:
A history of violence
Silence of the lambs

Animated film:
Cars
Up
Ratatouille
Monsters Inc
Ice Age 1

Driving Lessons. I didn't think I'd like it, but it's really good and turned me on to Salsa Celtica for some cool new music.

The new Star Trek was awesome... so definitely add that to your list.

Other than that, I don't know what else to add since most of the ones I know have already been suggested and I don't really go to the movies much myself.

Everyone's given some good choices. I'll add to them

A must in my book is Gone With the Wind. all in one sitting (so give yourself 4+ hours)

Others:

The Hustler
The Lord of the Rings (all three)
Jim Henson's Labyrinth
The Dark Crystal
Forrest Gump
All the Indiana Jones movies
Any musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein

I'm sure I could come up with a ton more, but with my suggestions as well as the others, I think we have you covered until August!!

I've seen GthW and the Indian Jones movies, but not Labyrinth nor the Dark Crystal. A good friend of mine has both, so I might be able to borrow them. Thanks
